APPRENTICESHIPS

AGA offers two types of Engineering apprenticeship:

  • Mechanical Trade (or Fitter and Turner)
  • Metal Fabrication Trade

Metal Fabrication engineers learn how to shape and fabricate metal. They learn to weld using TiG, MiG and arc welders, and cut, shape, assemble and fit metal in production and maintenance.

Mechanical Engineers (or fitters) learn precision engineering skills to shape, form and fit metals and synthetic materials, and carry out maintenance, repair and design of machinery and machine parts. The trade today uses a range of measuring equipment, Computer Aided Design (or CAD), Computer Numerical Controlled machines (CNC) and elements of robotics and pneumatics.

Engineers typically work in manufacturing workshops or in the mining, agricultural, shipbuilding and aerospace industries. The trade attracts excellent salaries and offers career opportunities both in Australia and internationally.

As the trade uses emerging technologies, strong numerical skills and problem solving abilities are an advantage for engineering apprentices.

Engineering apprenticeships with AGA take around 4 years to complete and involve both on-the-job work experience (with a host employer) and trade school training (delivered at no cost by AGA at one of our training facilities).

AGA also offers advanced trade training (at Certificate IV and Diploma level) to its Mechanical trade apprentices, offering you a qualification over and above the basic trade qualification.
