HOST AN APPRENTICE

Hiring an apprentice (or ‘hosting’) from AGA is easy and cost-effective. It enables employers to access the people that they need for their business today, and into the future.

Host employers hire an apprentice from AGA for a short or long term work placement. A dedicated field officer from AGA is assigned to each host and apprentice, and will regularly visit them in the workplace to monitor the apprentice’s training, help with any issues, and if necessary arrange a replacement apprentice for the host.

This employment model ensures our apprentices gain both forms of training necessary to complete their apprenticeship:

  • Structured (or trade school) training is delivered by AGA through our network of training centres;
  • On the job training occurs in the host’s workplace, as the apprentice learns their trade from qualified, experienced trades people.

How does it work for me?

The group training system is a complete apprentice management program. You save on overheads and hassles, because AGA handles all aspects of the apprentices’ employment. As the host employer, all you need to worry about is providing the work and supervising your apprentice.

Selection and pre-placement

AGA has been selecting and employing apprentices for more than 25 years. Entry into our apprenticeships is competitive; we know what makes a good apprentice, and look for the right attitude as well as the basic skills.

All AGA apprentices commence their employment with an intensive ‘front end’ training period that ensures they have the necessary basic skills, safety and confidence to start work with a host. They are paid by AGA during this time, which means that by the time they reach your workplace they are ready to contribute.

Managing a work placement

An AGA field officer will set up a work placement between an apprentice and host employer. You can meet with your apprentice before accepting the placement, and are not locked into long term contracts. Your field officer is on call any time you need a hand with your apprentice, so you don’t need to employ payroll or management staff to oversee your apprentice’s employment.

Because AGA employs all of its own apprentices, we reduce the risk and stress to employers in taking on an apprentice. As their employer, AGA takes responsibility for:

  • Arranging training for the apprentice or trainee
  • Paying their weekly salary and entitlements
  • Managing leave, tax and superannuation
  • Handling any Workcover matters
  • Removing apprentices if a placement ends, and finding them their next host employer.

Hosts are invoiced weekly, fortnightly or monthly for the actual hours that the apprentice is in your workplace. Everything else is taken care of by AGA.

Both the apprentice and host employer benefit from an ‘employment guarantee’ that AGA offers to all its appentices and trainees. This means that AGA will not sack an apprentice if they lose a placement with a host employer. If a host needs to cancel a placement, the apprentice continues training at one of our facilities while their field officer finds them their next job. They continue to be paid a salary by AGA and don’t lose their apprenticeship.

This offers peace of mind to both the apprentice and the employer, who knows that if their business slows down, their apprentice will not be disadvantaged.

Securing your business’ future

At the completion of their apprenticeship with us, the apprentice’s employment with AGA ends and in most cases they are immediately picked up by their current host. The host employer therefore has access to qualified employees who already understand their business, and have worked with them before.

And of course, you have the security of dealing with one of Australia’s most respected and experienced apprenticeship providers.
